Fashion is truly an art and a beautiful way for an individual to express themselves through their wardrobe.  It is an outlet that we can use to showcase what we are thinking or feeling without speaking a word. This being even more personal for the designer themselves. Like any art form it takes a creative mind, fierce devoted passion, inspiration through experience, and the desire to share it with the world.

Meet Miss Emily Ann, the founder of Emily Ann Designs. She is a 15 year old designer showcasing her first collection with SFDF this year. Emily is a true believer in the art form of Fashion and it has always been a passion she has been working on. With help from a mentor she has been crafting the art of sewing since the young age of seven. Emily started dreaming up her own pieces and finding it an outlet of self expression during tough times. I had the pleasure to sit down with her and ask some questions on background and her upcoming collection.

Q: What are you looking forward to most about SFDF?

I am so excited to be showcasing my first collection at my first fashion show. I am also thrilled to meet more people in the industry, and see what other designers are presenting on the runway.

Q: What brought on your love for sewing at such a young age?

I’ve always had a love for fashion and wanted to learn how to create my own designs. When I was younger I had the chance to see an Iris Van Herpen exhibit. I fell in love with her use of unique textiles and sculptural pieces. I was lucky enough that a family friend of ours was in the industry and mentored me in the art of sewing.

Q: Do you have a favourite piece you have made or make?

My specialty would be evening wear such as gowns. I love making these pieces that have more freedom to add avant-garde elements and designing gowns that feel like fantasy. There is so much more room to add self expression into the pieces.

Q: What is the inspiration behind the brand?

I believe that fashion is a form of art and self expression. It has gotten me through some hard times and my pieces are designed based on my own personal experience. I also want to create garments that make you feel confident, bold, and let your personality shine through.

Q: Where is Emily Ann’s Designs headed to next?

I would like to eventually make more collections and participate in more fashion shows. In the past I have sold my clothing at local Saskatoon markets such as Art In The Park. I would like to continue selling my pieces at more marketplaces.

Q: Who are some other designers you love and why?

Alexander McQueen and Alexander Wang are two of my favourite designers. I love how they always design unique and thoughtful clothing.

Q: What can our viewers expect on the runway?

My first collection is a Fall/Winter Evening Wear that I designed based on my personal experience with chronic pain. It is very close and dear to my heart.  It consists of mostly black and white with lots of graphics.

Thank you, Emily. We are thrilled to be showcasing Emily Ann’s Designs in this year’s festival and cannot wait to see the garments on the runway and what the future holds for such a bright talented young entrepreneur.
